I think it is natural for an algorithm rookie that when facing a challenging problem, a rookie may fall into her\his algorithm dictionary - she focuses on potential algorithms too much that the precious intuition\feeling to that problem gets lost.
For a well-grown algorithm soldier, he focuses, feels the problem first, ideally he would imagine out the potential process first, and then he looks up his armory and grab the best weapon to use.
