Research Paper 1 Guideline
Total: 20%
In order to obtain full credits, you need to read and follow this guideline carefully and
conduct your own research independently. You could refer to the posted “Sample Research
Paper” format. I know you’re a beginner. However, this is a graduate course, and we expect
you are capable of doing independent research. Be creative in developing your research
paper!!!
1. Select a topic from (a) image processing, (b) pattern recognition, (c) object
classification, or (d) deep learning.
2. Define your targeted problem and search literature for technical papers on the
current methods.
3. Dig into the NJIT library and the Internet resources to understand and implement
the required tasks in MATLAB.
4. Develop your own methodology and algorithm. Be creative!
5. Compare the performance of your program with currently available
state-of-the-art algorithms in this topic.
6. You will be received high commendation if you can develop an algorithm with
much better performance.
7. Write your research paper in your own words.
8. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE YOUR RESOURCE PAPER.
9. The website “turnitin” will check your entire paper against all the published
papers and provide me the percentage of similarity.
Note: In Moodle, you need to submit two separate files in Microsoft Word format:
(1) the paper word file and (2) the source MATLAB (place your code on a word file).
Using the NJIT digital library:
Go to NJIT digital library and search the journal name. It will direct you to IEEE or
Science Direct.
You will need your NJIT UCID to view the article.
Writing Guidelines
Structure (Refer to the posted "Sample Research Paper")
Your research paper should be between 10-20 pages and, at a minimum, include each of
the following items:
a. Title page
b. Abstract
Dr. Frank Shih
c. Introduction (motivation, problem statement, literature review,)
d. Existing methods
e. New (or improved) methods
f. Experimental results
g. Comparisons with existing methods
h. Conclusions
i. Reference page
Format and Requirements
a. Use Times New Roman font and size 12, double space, all margins (left, right, top,
bottom) 1 inch.
b. The references must be in proper IEEE format. Please refer to IEEE Trans. on
Image Processing for the sample format.
c. Submit to this Dropbox page before the deadlines. No hardcopy is needed. No
late submission is accepted.
d. You are supposed to write your research paper ALONE. Any sentences cannot be
copied from literature. If you need to copy one or two sentences, please quote
them and cite the references.
e. Do not use the Internet resources to copy an entire sentence and paste on your
paper.
f. You should write sentences in your own words. Use Turnitin.com to check the
percentage of plagiarism. If your work is identical (or mostly identical) to any work
in the published resources, it will be reported to Dean of Students and absolutely
cause FAIL in this course
