Windows Error 740 – The Requested Operation Requires Elevation
What Does Error 740 Mean?
If you are experiencing an error 740 message in Windows Vista or Windows 7 when trying to launch an application, it means the software was installed (or has been configured) to Run as Administrator. Here is an example of Error 740:
The actual error message will read something like:
“Error(740): The requested operation requires elevation.”
How To Prevent Error 740 Messages
Windows Vista and Windows 7 use a security measure setting called User Account Control. With different levels of permissions, it can cause problems when trying to run software applications as a normal “user” instead of a system-level “administrator”. Specific actions by a “user” will cause User Account Control to display a dialog message which will allow you to elevate your Windows permissions level to administrator. Any software application running with normal user permissions will not allow User Account Control this option.
Error 740 Solutions
1. Simply right-click on the application icon and select Run as Administrator. Most the time, this will solve the problem.
2. Turn of UAC (User Account Control)
- Open up Control Panel, and type “UAC” (without quotes) into the search box.
- Click the link for “Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off”.
- On the next screen, uncheck the box “Use User Account Control (UAC)”, and click OK.
- This process is for Windows Vista and it’s slightly easier in Windows 7.
